EVOLUTION OF THE "WASPs" NAME The graduates of the Women's Flying Training Detachment (WFTD) merged with Nancy Love’s group to form the Women’s Auxiliary Ferry Squadron (WAFS). Six months later, when the graduates were given other duties than ferrying, the acronym was changed to WASPs, which stands for the Women Airforce Service Pilots. |

Pilots wings presented to Graduating Classes varied widely. In 1943 the final official wings were presented to Class 44-1 and were worn by all graduated after that time.
