JACQUELINE COCHRAN

At the time of her death in 1980 Cochran held more speed, altitude, and distance records than any other male or female pilot in aviation history.

EVOLUTION OF THE "WASPs" NAME

The graduates of the Women's Flying Training Detachment (WFTD) merged with Nancy Love’s group to form the  Women’s Auxiliary Ferry Squadron (WAFS).  Six months later, when the graduates were given other duties than ferrying, the acronym was changed to WASPs, which stands for the Women Airforce Service Pilots.

Pilots wings presented to Graduating Classes varied widely.  In 1943 the final official wings were presented to Class 44-1 and were worn by all graduated after that time.

"The WASPs of the Ferrying Division leave behind them a truly impressive and unprecedented record, one with which I am sincerely proud to have been associated.  They have accomplished far more than the safe and efficient delivery of hundreds of vitally needed aircraft; they have proven beyond all doubt that in time of national emergency America can give its women the most challenging assignment with complete confidence."
