P-38 MODEL PROJECTS
Here is a small grouping of photos that Will Smith sent
us of his P-38 model project. The intricate detail is incredible -- and I
have a new-found respect for folks who work on these models. What a
project...and what an accomplishment! Here is what Will told us about his
project:
The build began in 2003 after buying a plan from NIck Ziroli in 2002 followed by a short kit from Jesse Wilkins at Laserlizard. The retracts were orginally Unitracts, made in the UK but which proved unsuitable for the model.ZP38 retracts were acquired on Ebay from a Modeller in Sardinia for 300 euros. This compares to paying 800GBP ($1600) if you buy them from a shop in the UK. The retracts were sold on to a man in France and I am awaiting a new set from Ziroli when they become available from Robart.
The plane has been a real joy to build with only small changes to the plan.Work has been intermittent because the family increased by six over the last four years (three grandsons and three granddaughters) They take up a lot of time. Recent changes in technology have made me think about fitting brushless outrunner motors and 10s Lipo packs at great expense. Some modellers have advised me to stick to g38's.
At the moment, flying the plane is not important as finishing it off.My time is spent gathering the bits and pieces during the year then doing a spurt of building from early autumn until mid winter. This prevents boredom setting in and keeps the interest alive. I would like to christen the plane "Maid of Harlech" after the recent discovery of the p-38 at Harlech. I hope Tighar wont mind! I will keep you informed of the progress.
