Fighter Two - Guadalcanal

A P‑38 Lightning flown by 339th Fighter Squadron commanding officer John Mitchell lands on Guadalcanal's "Fighter Two" airstrip, from which the 339th launched the top-secret mission to intercept the Mitsubishi GM41 "Betty" carrying Japanese Admiral Isoruko Yamamoto (the architect of the Pearl Harbor attack) on April 18, 1943.

This 32"x 23", limited edition, numbered print is signed by the artist and by four 339th Fighter Squadron, 347th Fighter Group, aces: Bill Harris (16 victories), John Mitchell (8, flight leader and navigator on Yamamoto mission), Rex Barber (5, credited with shooting down Yamamoto's aircraft) and George Chandler (5).

In May, 1944, P‑38 Lightnings of the 402nd Fighter Squadron, 370th Fighter Group, led by Capt. Cy Coenen and his wingman, make a bombing pass over a German munitions train near Koblenz, Germany.
